Doing the right thing at every step

Our main bush areas are over 100 years old, and include many mature native trees such as Rewarewa, Rimu, Totara and Kauri. Along with fencing the bush off, we have set-up a robust pest control program and work tirelessly to keep the possums and rats at bay. And we’re constantly on the hunt to remove those noxious and determined weeds that do their best to survive.

The results are so rewarding - our bush is becoming home to an abundance of native birds, lizards and even the endangered long-tail bats. Recent eDNA tests and sample nets show that we have various fish-life including koura (freshwater crayfish) in the bush streams and healthy populations of both short-fin and long-finned tuna in our portion of the Ruaotehuia Stream.

Our latest project was designed specifically to support these Tuna by creating a summer-safe Tuna Pond, adjacent to the main stream. These ponds are spring fed, and so provide a rich and natural habitat even during the driest of months.

Minimising our impact on the planet

We take full responsibility. All our farming equipment uses the latest technologies to reduce negative outputs and our carbon footprint. We mill our own wood for fencing rails and battens, and we are using Future Post* posts in our fences as we repair or replace them. We also recycle as possible, are part of the Plasback program and have several worm-farms to manage various waste items. We have dung beetles now too, whose job is to take the dung down into sub soil in balls, so we’re not losing that off the ground and into waterways.

*Future Posts are BioGro certified.
